You read something that it didn't say. That's one way people get smoked on CR.

Where does it say they expect solid profits within 5 years? Nowhere.

It says they are "ready to double the number of movie screens" within five years. For all we know, they expect returns to then accrue over the following twenty years.

Also, it does not say that teenagers will be a substantial proportion in over ten years. It says that over, meaning during, the next ten years that proportion will be growing. That indicates that in five years it will likely have grown some.

I am looking for assistance and some serious help. I think there is a fundamental flaw in the way I approach verbal section. Coming from a technological back-ground I have no issue at all with the Quantitative section, even with some goofs up and some silly experiments (To test the scoring algorithm in two CATs and actual Exam) I have always managed score above 40. My verbal part is really poor; I never have crossed 30 even in any of the two Manhattan CATs that I have finished so far. I am consistently scoring between 22 to 25 mark.
What you are saying sounds right. Something is wrong with your approach. Even with any language issues you may have you still could be getting enough right to score much higher in verbal.

My call? Rather than learning how use logic and smarts to hack the questions, you have attempted to learn a plethora of rules and strategies and somehow thought you would then start getting the questions right.

The truth is this. GMAT verbal questions as much different from GMAT quant questions as you might think. At their foundation they are logic based, and so getting them right tends to take logic and hacking skills similar to those one uses to get quant questions right.

Having said that, I do notice in your writing above some flaws in the way you wrote some things. So probably you could use some more work on grammar, idioms and other language details.

Of course I could be wrong about this as I am not really aware of what you have done so far to prepare for GMAT verbal. Still, I am probably right to some degree.

So maybe you could take this further by helping people better answer you question by describing your preparation for and experience with GMAT verbal in more detail, which could include a breakdown of how you do in the three question types, SC, CR and RC.

Also, you may get some insight by reading this post about my strategy for rocking GMAT verbal.

Hi,

Is the paid exam pack of GMATPrep easier than the two free GMATPrep Practice Exams.

I gave 3 GMATPreps Exams and one Veritas Exam...

Veritas Score- 710
GMATPrep Free Practice Exam 1 - 690
GMATPrep Free Practice Exam 1 - 680
GMATPrep Paid Practice Exam 1 - 740

Which is a more reliable indicator of my score on the actual GMAT?

Also can anyone predict my score range??

Hi Abhijit K,

GMAC has publicly stated that the score that you earn on your Official GMAT is within +-30 points of actual ability. Assuming a similar 'swing' in your practice CAT scores, you're scoring right around 710 (+-30 points). Keep in mind that the accuracy of CAT results depends heavily on how YOU choose to take the CATs. The more realistic and 'test-like' you make those experiences, the more likely the score results are to be accurate. If you deviate from the standard Test Day 'event' (skipping sections, pausing the CAT, taking it at home, taking it at a different time of day from your Official Test time, etc.), your scores can deviate too.

Hi Abhijit K,

You really should do your own research, but here's a listing that came up after a quick Google search. You'll have to look into the various details for each program and decide whether you want to go through the effort to apply.

Hi Vincelauret,

These types of Weighted Average questions can be solved in a variety of ways. Here's an approach that uses the standard Average Formula:

A = # of kilograms of candy A
B = # of kilograms of candy B

(10.2A + 14B)/(A + B) = 11.625

10.2A + 14B = 11.625A + 11.625B
2.375B = 1.425A
2375B = 1425A

2375/1425 = A/B

At this point, you should notice that the numerator is GREATER than the denominator, so the ratio is GREATER than 1:1 (and only one of the answers matches this pattern).

Final Answer: B

Hi atitudeboy,

I'd like to know a bit more about how you've been studying:

1) How long have you been studying for the GMAT? How much of that time has been spent on the Verbal section?
2) What materials are you using?
3) How have you scored on each of your practice CATs (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores)?
4) Do you ever finish any of the sections early? Do you ever run out of time (and guess on a bunch of questions just to finish)? Do you ever leave any questions unanswered?

5) What is your goal score?
6) When are you planning to take the GMAT?

Thankfully, the Verbal section of the GMAT is just as standardized and predictable as the Quant section is, so you CAN train to score at a high level. You just have to make the necessary adjustments to how you handle the Verbal section and invest in the proper study materials.

Data Sufficiency :: Is N divisible by 7? Question about zero

Subject: Is N divisible by 7? Question about zero
Posted: Sat Mar 14, 2015 10:11 am (GMT -8)

Question that may have been answered before:

Is N divisible by 7?
1) N = x-y, where x and y are integers
2) x is divisible by 7, y is not

Now, I understand that 1 could be yes or no depending on what integers you put in for x and y so that's insufficient. 2 is obviously insufficient because it doesn't talk about N. Every post I have seen says c is the answer but my question is what if you put 0 (an integer) in for y? Does the answer become e? Is zero technically divisible by 7 (or any number for that matter) because the remainder is zero? I suppose if 0 is divisible by 7 then that wouldn't satisfy 2 as a value for y and then the answer would indeed be c.

Thanks in advance for the help!

vipulgoyal wrote:

(1) x is not an integer.
(2) x is positive.
CRITICAL POINT approach:

CRITICAL POINTS occur when an inequality is UNDEFINED or when the left side is EQUAL to the right side.
x²/(x-1) is undefined when x=1.
x²/(x-1) = x when x=0.
Thus, the critical points are x=0 and x=1.

To determine the ranges where x²/(x-1) > x, test one value to the left and right of each critical point.

x<0:
If we plug x=-1 into x²/(x-1) > x, we get:
(-1)²/(-1-1) > -1
-1/2 > -1.
This works.
Thus, x<0 is a valid range.

0<x<1:
If we plug x=1/2 into x²/(x-1) > x, we get:
(1/2)²/(1/2 - 1 ) > 1/2
-1/2 > 1/2.
Doesn't work.
Thus, 0<x<1 is NOT a valid range.

x>1:
If we plug x=2 into x²/(x-1) > x, we get:
(2)²/(2-1) > 2
4 > 2.
This works.
Thus, x>0 is a valid range.

Result:
x²/(x-1) > x if x<0 or x>1.

Question stem, rephrased:
Is x<0 or x>1?

Statements combined:
It's possible that x=1/2, in which case the answer to the question stem is NO.
It's possible that x=1.5, in which case the answer to the question stem is YES.
Thus, the two statements combined are INSUFFICIENT.

The correct answer is E.

0 is considered a multiple of every positive integer.
That said, the GMAT does not typically test this concept.
On the GMAT, problems about divisibility are generally constrained to POSITIVE VALUES.
If the problem above were to appear on the GMAT, it would almost certainly be made clear that x and y are positive integers and that x>y.

Hello,

No, the questions are listed only once.
You need to determine how much practice you get.
So, if after 10 practice questions, you feel you fully understand the topic, then you might stop. Conversely, you may not feel fully comfortable with the topic until you've completed dozens and dozens of questions.

The quick (and guaranteed!) answer is somewhere from 200 to 800 inclusive.
The long answer is: "it depends"

Are you someone who crumbles under the pressure of a formal testing environment? Or are you someone who rises to the challenge and actually outperforms all previous practice tests?

I mention this because I think it's VERY important to adopt a proper mindset on test day. This can make or break your test. To this end, you may be interested in reading the following articles:

The Improvement Cart is aligned with the OG13 and OG2015.
As you're answering practice questions from the Official Guide (OG), you can enter your responses in the Improvement Cart. There are 2 reasons for this:
1) You will be automatically told whether your response is correct or incorrect. This saves you from needing to check the Answer Key each time.
2) The Chart breaks questions into different categories (e.g., percent, statistics, etc), so it will help identify weaknesses.

The Progress Chart is for keeping track of certain weaknesses you may have.
